Frequently asked questions
What is Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy?
IFS is a transformative, evidence-based model of psychotherapy developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz. It understands the mind as naturally multiple — made up of sub-personalities or "parts" that interact as an internal family. IFS helps people access their core Self to heal wounded parts and restore internal harmony.
What does IFS Certified mean?
IFS Institute certification requires completion of IFS Level 1 and Level 2 training, plus extensive supervised practice and a formal review process. Certified therapists demonstrate advanced competency in the IFS model. IFS Institute also designates Lead Trainers and Program Consultants at even higher levels.
How is IFS different from other parts-based therapies?
IFS is distinct in its emphasis on Self-leadership — the idea that everyone has an undamaged core Self capable of healing. Unlike ego state therapy or voice dialogue, IFS has a specific framework for understanding how parts develop protective roles (managers, firefighters) around wounded exiles, and a systematic process for unburdening them.
What is IFS therapy good for?
IFS is effective for trauma, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, addiction, and relational difficulties. It's particularly powerful for complex trauma and attachment wounds, where multiple parts carry different burdens. Many people find IFS intuitive and empowering because it treats all parts with compassion rather than pathologizing them.
