Nick Austin defines himself as a trauma clinician. His first degree was medicine, and he worked in psychiatry for 20 years — including 10 years on acute psychiatric wards and 6 years in a community team, alongside work in gender psychiatry and trauma teams. He holds a 5-year medical degree and a 4-year Masters in sex and relationship psychotherapy. He was on the government list of Gender Specialists and was ADOS-2 and DIVA trained to enable competent understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders. He has since handed back his license to practise medicine, concluding he can better help people explore and heal their minds outside the medical role.

Of all the models of psychotherapy he encountered, Internal Family Systems (IFS) spoke to him most. He is trained in IFS Levels 1, 2, and 3, is a Certified IFS Therapist, an IFS-Institute Approved Clinical Consultant, and an IFS Co-Lead Trainer. He has assisted on 15+ IFS trainings in a variety of roles, organised in the UK, Europe, the US, and the Middle East. He is also accredited with COSRT and UKCP as a Sex and Relationship Psychotherapist.

Nick provides IFS therapy integrated with his broader clinical experience, working with individuals in person and online, in the UK and internationally. He also offers supervision and consultation to IFS and trauma therapists, individually or as a team. Since 2021, he has served as a Trustee of Middle Street Resource Centre, a charity offering community and belonging for those living with or in recovery from mental health difficulties.
