Frequently asked questions

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based psychotherapy for trauma and PTSD. It uses bilateral stimulation — typically guided eye movements — to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories. Research shows it can produce significant improvement in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy.

What makes a depth-oriented EMDR therapist different?

Most EMDR practitioners use it as a standalone technique. The therapists in this directory integrate EMDR with depth psychology — psychodynamic therapy, somatic approaches, attachment theory, IFS, or Jungian perspectives. This combination addresses not just symptoms but the underlying relational and developmental patterns.

What does EMDRIA Certified mean?

EMDRIA (EMDR International Association) certification requires a minimum of 20 hours of consultation with an approved consultant, 50+ EMDR sessions with clients, and advanced training beyond the basic certification. An EMDRIA Approved Consultant has even more extensive experience and can train other therapists.

Does insurance cover EMDR therapy?

Many insurance plans cover EMDR therapy, as it is recognized as an evidence-based treatment by the WHO, APA, and VA/DoD. Coverage depends on your specific plan and the therapist's licensure. Ask both your insurance provider and the therapist during an initial consultation.
