Frequently asked questions
What is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-oriented approach to healing trauma developed by Dr. Peter Levine. Rather than focusing primarily on thoughts or emotions, SE works with the body's innate capacity to regulate the nervous system. It helps resolve the physiological patterns that keep people stuck in fight, flight, or freeze responses.
What does SEP mean?
SEP stands for Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. It indicates completion of the full three-year SE Professional Training, which includes beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels plus case consultations. This is the highest level of SE certification.
How is SE different from other body-based therapies?
SE works specifically with the autonomic nervous system's trauma responses through careful titration — processing small amounts of activation at a time to build resilience. Unlike some body therapies, SE doesn't require physical touch (though it can include it) and focuses on completing the body's interrupted defensive responses.
What conditions does Somatic Experiencing treat?
SE is effective for PTSD, chronic pain, anxiety, attachment trauma, developmental trauma, and stress-related conditions. It's particularly helpful for people who find talk therapy alone insufficient — when the body holds patterns that words can't fully reach.
