Bly arrived at depth psychology sideways — through Rilke, through Neruda, through the Spanish *duende* that Lorca described as the death-force that makes genuine art possible — and that oblique entry is precisely what makes him unusual in the Jungian lineage. Where most inheritors of Jung move toward abstraction, Bly moved toward sound: the image heard rather than interpreted, the shadow encountered in the body before the concept. His contribution to shadow work is less theoretical than phenomenological — he offers the felt sense of what it costs to carry the unlived life, and he makes that cost audible in language before he makes it thinkable in argument. The mythopoetic men’s movement he catalyzed has aged unevenly, and some of its assumptions about masculine essence deserve the critique they have received, but the core motion — descent before ascent, grief before initiation, the underworld as the path not the detour — remains worth following.
