Dr. Rie Rogers Mitchell is Professor Emeritus in Educational Psychology and Counseling at California State University, Northridge, and one of the most influential figures in the development of sandplay therapy as a recognized therapeutic modality. She studied directly with Dora Kalff and has served as President of both the International Society for Sandplay Therapy and Sandplay Therapists of America.
Mitchell co-authored, with Harriet Friedman, three foundational texts: 'Sandplay: Past, Present and Future' (Routledge, 1994), 'Supervision of Sandplay Therapy' (Routledge, 2007), and 'Sandplay Wisdom: Understanding Sandplay Therapy' (Routledge, 2021). These works have defined the theoretical, historical, and supervisory landscape of sandplay therapy for an entire generation of practitioners.
In 2015, she received the Kalff-Bradway Award, the highest honor in sandplay therapy, recognizing over four decades of pioneering contributions to the field.
