Frequently asked questions

What is depth-oriented art therapy?

Depth-oriented art therapy uses creative expression — drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, movement — as a direct pathway to unconscious material. Rooted in Jungian active imagination and psychodynamic theory, it goes beyond art as a "coping skill" to engage images, symbols, and the body as vehicles for psychological transformation.

What does ATR-BC mean?

ATR-BC stands for Art Therapist Registered-Board Certified. It is awarded by the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB) and requires a master's degree in art therapy, supervised clinical hours, and passing a national board certification exam. It is the highest standard credential in the field.

Do I need to be artistic to benefit from art therapy?

No artistic skill is required. Art therapy is about the process of making and the images that emerge, not aesthetic quality. A depth-oriented art therapist is trained to work with whatever you create — stick figures, abstract marks, color fields — as meaningful expressions of your inner world.

What is the difference between art therapy and expressive arts therapy?

Art therapy typically focuses on visual arts (drawing, painting, sculpture) within a psychotherapeutic framework. Expressive arts therapy (EXA) is intermodal — it integrates visual art, music, movement, drama, and writing. Both can be depth-oriented; the choice often depends on the practitioner's training and your natural affinities.
