Steven Herrmann, PhD, MFT is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified Jungian Analyst, and analyst member of the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco, based in Montclair, Oakland, CA. With over 38 years of clinical experience and 50 years of study in Jungian psychology, he offers Jungian analysis and depth-oriented psychotherapy to individual adults, couples, children, and families. His work is rooted in psychodynamic psychotherapy, family systems, transpersonal psychology, sandplay therapy, active imagination, journaling, spirituality, and dreamwork.
He began his journey at UC Santa Cruz, where he created an individual major in 'Depth Psychology and Religion' and taught Jung's theories on dream interpretation under the tutelage of poet William Everson. He earned his BA in 1982 with a senior thesis on Meister Eckhart, followed by an MA in Clinical Psychology from John F. Kennedy University and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Rosebridge Graduate School of Integrative Psychology. His master's thesis focused on 'Vocational Dreams and the Nuclear Self' and his dissertation on 'Vocational Development in Childhood.' He was licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in 1988 and completed his Jungian analytic certification at the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco in 2018.
In addition to his clinical practice, Herrmann teaches in the analytic training program at the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco and offers clinical consultation for licensed therapists and professionals. He is an internationally recognized speaker, lecturer, poet, and author of ten books and numerous scholarly publications, integrating Jungian psychology with poetic reverie and clinical insight. His approach holds that neurosis often masks the creative impulse—the will to become fully oneself—and that depth psychotherapy supports the emergence of creativity, resilience, and transformation.
