Unus Mundus as Convergence of Physics and Psyche
Unus Mundus as Convergence of Physics and Psyche
Jung’s jung-mysterium-coniunctionis ends with a hypothesis offered to physicists. Paragraph 769 reads: “the common background of microphysics and depth-psychology is as much physical as psychic and therefore neither, but rather a third thing, a neutral nature which can at most be grasped in hints since in essence it is transcendental. The background of our empirical world thus appears to be in fact a unus mundus” (Jung 1955). This is not metaphor. Jung spent thirty years in correspondence with Wolfgang Pauli working out the claim that the psychoid archetype functions as a formal ordering principle in both domains.
The convergence has three empirical footholds. First, synchronicity — the meaningful coincidence of a psychic state and an outer event not causally linked — is an empirical hint that the same ordering operates in psyche and in world (Jung 1960, CW 8). Second, qualitative-number: marie-louise-von-franz in von-franz-psyche-and-matter (2014) follows Jung’s observation that “nearly all divinatory techniques that are based on the idea of synchronicity employ the first whole numbers” and concludes that number is “an archetype of order that is in the process of becoming conscious.” Each integer, on this reading, has a quantitative aspect and a “specific retrograde Gestalt relation to the one-continuum” — the unus mundus itself. Third, the Pauli circle: Bohm on the holomovement, Heisenberg’s call to return to Pythagorean number theory, Gödel’s Platonic turn — all cited by von Franz as parallel attempts to think the same ground from the physicist’s side.
The thread is the one Sebastian must hold: the depth tradition’s final move is not retreat into symbol but advance into a metaphysics shared with twentieth-century physics. The archetype is the hinge.
