Anthony occupies an unusual position in the I Ching’s Western reception: she is neither a sinologist defending the text’s classical integrity nor a Jungian assimilating it to analytic categories, but a practitioner who took the oracle seriously enough to let it correct her. What distinguishes her reading is its relational texture — the I Ching in her hands is not a symbol-system to decode but a dialogue, and the difference matters enormously. Where most Western commentaries treat the hexagrams as archetypal containers whose meaning can be extracted and carried away, Anthony insists the oracle speaks to a specific situation and will not be generalized without loss. Her work is worth consulting when a reader has already received a casting and wants to sit with it rather than crack it open — when the question is not “what does Heaven over Mountain mean” but “what is this image saying to *this* moment.” The prose is quiet and unhurried, which is itself an argument about how the oracle should be approached.
