Michael P. Bogenschutz, M.D., is a professor of psychiatry at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and the founding director of the NYU Langone Center for Psychedelic Medicine, one of the most prominent academic psychedelic research centers in the world. Board-certified in both psychiatry and addiction psychiatry, Dr. Bogenschutz has devoted more than thirty years to clinical research and practice, with a particular focus on the intersection of psychedelic medicine and addiction treatment. His landmark randomized controlled trial demonstrated that two doses of psilocybin combined with psychotherapy reduced heavy drinking by eighty-three percent in patients with alcohol use disorder, with nearly half of participants achieving complete abstinence by eight months. This study, published in JAMA Psychiatry, represents one of the most compelling demonstrations of psilocybin's therapeutic potential to date. Dr. Bogenschutz has also served as a clinical investigator for MAPS MDMA-assisted psychotherapy trials and is currently leading studies on psilocybin for opioid use disorder. His laboratory employs fMRI neuroimaging and objective behavioral measures to elucidate the mechanisms by which psilocybin affects core domains of the addiction phenotype, including incentive salience, negative affect, and executive functioning. He is a scientific advisor to multiple psychedelic medicine companies and a sought-after speaker on the responsible integration of psychedelic therapies into evidence-based psychiatric practice.
