About
Sue A. Genest graduated from the University of Calgary with a BA (1st Class Honours) and an MSc in Counselling Psychology. She is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (BCACC #14038) and Canadian Certified Counsellor (#6906), has been practicing since 2006, and has worked as a counsellor in varying capacities since 1993. With over 33 years of experience in the mental health field and healthcare, she has served as a crisis and career counsellor, disability care provider, health educator, researcher in mental health, and university and private instructor.
Sue is a Certified EMDR Therapist, EMDRIA Approved Consultant, and EMDR Training Provider offering both virtual and in-person trainings. She has been part of the EMDR community for 22 years, including 19 years of clinical EMDR practice and 10 years of online EMDR with clients. She teaches EMDR Basic and Advanced trainings across Canada and provides EMDR Consultation for therapists seeking certification. She also brings 18+ years of experience as a Somatic Therapist, including as a graduate of the Hakomi Body Psychotherapy program.
In her private practice, Sue works with womyn, men, adults, adolescents, children, and couples in areas including trauma (childhood trauma, abuse, car accidents), PTSD, grief, anxiety, stress, depression, personal and professional development, self-esteem, and addictions. Her approach is holistic and grounded in the principles of non-violence, mindfulness, organicity, wholeness, and unity. She integrates Hakomi, EMDR, CBT, DBT, Imagery, Indigenous teachings (with Cree, Ojibway, Dakota, Peruvian, and Mexican Elders), Eastern teachings, and other modalities.
Over the years, Sue has won numerous awards for her academic work and has taught several classes at the University of Calgary, including counselling skills, lifespan development, mind/body/spirit medicine, qualitative research, and sexuality. She has published articles and delivered presentations in the areas of holistic healing, pediatrics, qualitative research, sexuality, and career counselling. In 2024, she achieved a 98.44% EMDR training completion rate.
Clinical Orientation
Graduate of the Hakomi Body Psychotherapy program — a mindfulness-based, somatic, depth-oriented approach rooted in the body's wisdom and nonviolent self-discovery. Integrates Hakomi's experiential, body-centered framework with EMDR processing, creating a practice that honors both the body and the unconscious. Also draws on Indigenous teachings, Eastern philosophy, imagery work, and Ego State therapy.
