Roanne Barnett

Dr. Roanne Barnett, PhD, has been in private practice for over 35 years, combining Interpersonal psychodynamic therapy with specialized trauma techniques to help clients navigate exceptional challenges in living. Her approach is rooted in the belief that psychotherapy is a collaborative endeavor — working with curiosity, empathy, and specialized skills to help individuals discover how they feel about themselves, their relationships, their past, and their future, ultimately removing the personal roadblocks that interfere with living a meaningful life.

Dr. Barnett is one of a rare group of clinicians who holds a full NYU Postdoctoral certificate in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis while also integrating EMDR — a modality that works directly with the brain to address the painful and life-limiting legacies of disruptive, abusive, or otherwise extraordinary experiences. She specializes in the effects of ongoing 'atmospheric' family trauma as well as discrete trauma, and engages all modalities in a highly interactive manner.

She works with individuals, couples, and families across a wide age range — from birth through 6 years (infant/caregiver intervention) and from 21 years through senior years. Her specialties include relationship issues, trauma and PTSD, parenting and grandparenting, anxiety, depression, developmental issues across the life span, couples therapy, and hypnosis. She also serves as faculty for the Chinese American Psychoanalytic Alliance and provides supervising and mentoring for young mental health professionals.
