Helen Romas-Werts
EMDR TrainedClinical Psychologist
Melbourne, VIC, Australia
About
Helen Romas-Werts is the principal psychologist at RMB Psychology in Melbourne, bringing a truly unique clinical profile shaped by 30 years as an emergency first responder before transitioning to clinical psychology. This lived experience gives her firsthand understanding of operational trauma, the challenges of a career in service, and the often-overlooked internal organisational stressors — including unhealthy workplace dynamics and bullying — that can cause just as much harm as the horrors witnessed on the job.
Prior to establishing RMB Psychology, Helen worked on a multidisciplinary team at The Melbourne Clinic, Australia's largest private psychiatric hospital, where she ran Victoria's first inpatient EMDR program. In this role she facilitated multiple group sessions within the EMDR program as well as individual trauma sessions with patients.
At RMB Psychology, Helen integrates Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR), Somatic Experiencing® (SE), and Internal Family Systems (IFS) as her primary therapeutic modalities, supplemented by Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT). Both EMDR and TF-CBT are internationally recognised gold standard, evidence-based treatments for PTSD. Her triple integration of these advanced modalities is exceptionally rare in Australia.
Helen is a strong advocate for trauma-informed, healing-centred, and neurodiverse affirming care. Her practice operates on the principle of treating the whole person — mind and body — asking 'What happened to you?' and bearing witness to each client's story in a safe, validating therapeutic relationship.
Clinical Orientation
Integrates EMDR with Somatic Experiencing (Peter Levine's body-based trauma approach) and Internal Family Systems (Level 3 — the highest clinical training level). This combination creates a deeply layered approach: IFS for parts work and internal system exploration, SE for nervous system regulation and body-based processing, and EMDR for reprocessing traumatic memories. Her 30 years as a first responder bring embodied understanding of trauma.
