Former President of the IAAP (International Association of Analytical Psychology) — the foremost leadership position in global Jungian analysis. Son of legendary Hayao Kawai (Japan's most famous psychologist). Professor Emeritus at Kyoto University, formerly at the Kokoro Research Center (elected Director 2018) and Institute for the Future of Human Society. Graduated from Kyoto University (1983), PhD in Psychology from Zurich University (1987), Diploma from C.G. Jung Institute Zurich (1990). Editor-in-Chief of the Japanese Journal of Jungian Psychology (first published 2009). Senior analyst for the Association of Jungian Analysts, Japan (AJAJ). Publishes in English, German, and Japanese. Research focuses on image-based psychotherapy, where the client's narrative has autonomous function rather than being intentionally created. Published extensively on Jungian analysis, training of analysts, psychosomatic conditions, autism spectrum disorder, and postmodern consciousness in psychotherapy. Publications in the Journal of Analytical Psychology and other major journals.
