Christopher Jerome Carter is a licensed psychoanalyst, certified Jungian analyst, and one of the foremost voices addressing racial justice within the Jungian tradition. He holds a Master of Divinity and a Master of Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary, where he concentrated in educational psychology, pastoral psychology, and bereavement. He earned both a Master of Philosophy and a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychiatry and Religion from the joint program of Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary, becoming one of the first African Americans to graduate from UTS's doctoral program in that field.
In 2016, Carter began a five-year psychoanalytic apprenticeship with the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association, completing his training and establishing his private practice upon licensure in 2021. He is the fifth African American to be licensed as an IAAP-certified Jungian psychoanalyst — a distinction that underscores both his individual achievement and the profession's historical shortcomings on matters of diversity. He is also an analyst member of the Philadelphia Association of Jungian Analysts and an Honored Trustee at the Association of Jungian Analysts in the United Kingdom.
Carter's scholarly contributions have earned significant recognition. His article 'Time for Space at the Table,' a first-person reflection calling on the IAAP to publicly address the white supremacist dimensions of Jung's writings, received the 2021 Gradiva Award. He is co-editor, with Tiffany Houck-Loomis, of 'Jungian Reflections on Systemic Racism: Members of an American Psychoanalytic Community on Training, Practice, and Inclusivity' (Routledge, 2023). His recognitions include Marquis Who's Who in America (2024-2025) and America's Best in Medicine (2026). His clinical work centers on development and emotional regulation, personality disorders, and vocational calling.
