Archetypal Astrology
Archetypal Astrology
Archetypal astrology is the reading of the planetary and zodiacal symbols as archetypes — psychic patterns that organize experience — rather than as deterministic forces. Its mid-twentieth-century formulation belongs to Dane Rudhyar, whose person-centered astrology reframed the horoscope as a phenomenology of individuation. Its late-twentieth-century elaboration belongs to Liz Greene (the psychological school of astrology centered at the Centre for Psychological Astrology in London) and to Richard Tarnas (whose Cosmos and Psyche proposes a rigorous correlative method grounded in synchronicity).
The tradition reads astrology as Jung read it: as a symbolic system in which the archetypes of the collective psyche appear projected onto the sky, and whose correspondences with biographical and historical time operate as synchronistic rather than causal events.
