The Objective Psyche as Inherited Neoplatonism
The Objective Psyche as Inherited Neoplatonism
Jung’s objective psyche is a modern re-inscription of a doctrine the Lineage has held since Plotinus: that the individual soul is not a private possession but the participation of the subject in a psychic order that precedes and exceeds it. The Enneads state this plainly. The soul “is a god, a later phase of the divine… it penetrates to this sphere in a voluntary plunge” (Plotinus, Enneads IV). The content of the individual soul is not invented by the individual; it is drawn from a reservoir the Neoplatonists called the World-Soul and the alchemists the anima mundi. “The content of the creative soul includes the Ideal shapes of gods and of all else: and hence it is that the kosmos contains all” (Plotinus, Enneads V).
What Jung adds is not the ontology but the procedure. For Plotinus the soul’s task is return (epistrophe) toward the One. For Jung the soul’s task is Auseinandersetzung — a dialectical confrontation with the objective stratum rather than a metaphysical reunion with it. The direction is reversed, but the furniture is largely inherited. Jung’s late concept of the [[unus-mundus|unus mundus]] — the one world in which psyche and matter are a single substance — is explicitly a re-reading of the Neoplatonic One through the lens of synchronicity and the coniunctio.
Edinger’s Ego and Archetype makes the lineage explicit: the alchemical opus is “the labor of Man the Redeemer in the cause of the divine world-soul slumbering and awaiting redemption in matter” (Edinger 1972, p. 103). The objective psyche is the anima mundi read in the register of modern psychology.
