Edinger’s Pedagogical Method — Charts, Operations, Amplification
What makes Anatomy of the Psyche teachable as a clinical reference is the form it imposes on alchemical chaos. Each chapter opens with a chart — a diagram that groups the symbolic field around a single operation. The chart for mortificatio, for instance, arranges around the operation’s core the imagery of corvi, vultures, the skull, rebirth, the grave, sowing, wounds, wilderness, worms, corpses, the dragon-king’s blackness, humiliation, torture, crucifixion. The chart for coagulatio gathers chains, body, lead, earth, blackness, birth, fall, diamond, analogy, spinning, churning, weaving, fate, flesh, food, fire, sulphur (Edinger 1985).
The charts are not decoration. They are the claim that “they all come from the same source — the archetypal psyche” (Edinger 1985). Edinger uses the cluster to make visible the convergent reference of otherwise disparate images: a dream of a cauldron, a story of Shadrach in the furnace, a Hindu image of Agni, a shaman’s ordeal by fire all appear together under calcinatio because the psyche gathers them there. The amplification method — Jung‘s technique of reading an image against the whole archive of its analogues — is here given a teaching form.
The pedagogical grammar carries through the amplification itself. Each operation-chapter moves from chart to texts: an alchemical quotation, a scripture verse, a myth, a dream, a piece of art, a clinical vignette. The method trains the analyst to recognize the operation in whichever register it appears. Anatomy is the book in which Jung’s amplification becomes a curriculum.
