The Apatheia / Metriopatheia Axis
The Apatheia / Metriopatheia Axis
The Lineage disagrees with itself about the passions. Two ideals run in parallel across the tradition’s history, and every serious figure takes a position between them.
The eradicative line. Anaxagoras, Socrates, the Cynic succession (Antisthenes, Diogenes, Crates), Zeno and the entire Stoic school, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, evagrius-ponticus, john-cassian, the hesychast tradition. The pathē are errors, and the mature soul is free of them. plotinus belongs here with qualification: the body may still be struck; the soul itself is apathēs (Sorabji 2000, par. 71).
The moderating line. Aristotle, the Peripatetics, most Middle Platonists, the Pyrrhonian sceptics in a qualified way, Augustine and Jerome against the Evagrians, the Cappadocian Fathers in their consolation literature (Sorabji 2000, par. 68, par. 136). Metriopatheia — moderation of the passions, not their eradication — is the norm. Gregory of Nazianzus: “there is a time for weeping.”
The axis is not a simple binary. Gregory of Nyssa, in Macrina’s deathbed dialogue, constructs two levels of apatheia, the higher ridding the soul entirely of thumos and epithumia, the lower allowing them as mere hormai under reason’s rule — a concessionary apatheia that approximates metriopatheia (Sorabji 2000, par. 138). plotinus distinguishes the first movement in the body from the soul’s state. The Platonic tripartite-soul itself furnishes the architecture in which either ideal can be spoken.
Analytical psychology stands on a third ground. edward-edinger‘s reading of Stoicism argues that the psychological analogue of apatheia is not eradication but disidentification: the ego releases its identification with the affects and recognizes them as emanations of the self. This is neither Stoic nor Aristotelian but a third term. cody-peterson‘s Abolished Middle meanwhile argues that Socrates’ eviction of Xanthippe from the cell is the founding abolition of thumos — the feeling function — that set philosophical apatheia on its career (Peterson 2026). The Lineage’s disagreement remains productive; the graph records it without resolving it.
