Terribly then did he cry aloud, and the rock rang around; and we, seized with terror, shrank back, while he wrenched from his eye the stake, all befouled with blood, and flung it from him, wildly waving his arms. Then he called aloud to the Cyclopes, who dwelt round about him in caves among the windy heights, and they heard his cry and came thronging from every side, and standing around the cave asked him what ailed him: “‘What so sore distress is thine, Polyphemus, that thou criest out thus through the immortal night, and makest us sleepless? Can it be that some mortal man is driving off thy flocks against thy will, or slaying thee thyself by guile or by might?’ “‘Then from out the cave the mighty Polyphemus answered them: ‘My friends, it is Noman that is slaying me by guile and not by force.’
φαρμάσσων· τὸ γὰρ αὖτε σιδήρου γε κράτος ἐστίν ὣς τοῦ σίζʼ ὀφθαλμὸς ἐλαϊνέῳ περὶ μοχλῷ. σμερδαλέον δὲ μέγʼ ᾤμωξεν, περὶ δʼ ἴαχε πέτρη, ἡμεῖς δὲ δείσαντες ἀπεσσύμεθʼ· αὐτὰρ μοχλὸν ἐξέρυσʼ ὀφθαλμοῖο πεφυρμένον αἵματι πολλῷ. τὸν μὲν ἔπειτʼ ἔρριψεν ἀπὸ ἕο χερσὶν ἀλύων, αὐτὰρ Κύκλωπας μεγάλʼ ἤπυεν, οἵ ῥά μιν ἀμφὶς ᾤκεον ἐν σπήεσσι διʼ ἄκριας ἠνεμοέσσας. οἱ δὲ βοῆς ἀίοντες ἐφοίτων ἄλλοθεν ἄλλος, ἱστάμενοι δʼ εἴροντο περὶ σπέος ὅττι κήδοι· τίπτε τόσον, Πολύφημʼ, ἀρημένος ὧδʼ ἐβόησας νύκτα διʼ ἀμβροσίην καὶ ἀύπνους ἄμμε τίθησθα; μή τίς σευ μῆλα βροτῶν ἀέκοντος ἐλαύνει; μή τίς σʼ αὐτὸν κτείνει δόλῳ ἠὲ βίηφιν; τοὺς δʼ αὖτʼ ἐξ ἄντρου προσέφη κρατερὸς Πολύφημος·
