Richard Sorabji

Richard Sorabji is a British philosopher and classicist whose work on ancient theories of mind, emotion, time, and agency has shaped contemporary scholarly access to the Greek and Hellenistic inheritance. His Emotion and Peace of Mind: From Stoic Agitation to Christian Temptation (2000) is the landmark study of the transition from classical Greek pathē through Stoic and Peripatetic theories into the Christian contemplative tradition’s vocabulary of the passions.

For the Seba graph Sorabji supplies the philological apparatus by which apatheia, the discipline of the emotions, and the late-antique pre-Christian precedents for Cassian’s eight logismoi can be traced. His treatment stands alongside Dihle’s and Adkins’s in the scholarly recovery the tradition requires.
