Muḥammad ibn Umail (Senior)

Muḥammad ibn Umail al-Tamīmī — known to Latin alchemy as Senior, “the Sheikh” — was a tenth-century Shi’ite alchemist whose Book of the Silvery Water and Starry Earth (Latin De chemia) preserved the image-language later alchemy would live on. He is a decisive figure for the Jungian reading of alchemy because his texts carry, in a register of unhurried poetry, the love-letter between the Sun and the Waxing Moon that Jung treats in [[jung-mysterium-coniunctionis|Mysterium Coniunctionis]] as emblematic of the coniunctio.

Von Franz, in [[von-franz-cg-jung-his|C. G. Jung: His Myth in Our Time]], sets Ibn Umail in the current of Shi’ite mystical alchemy: “Muhammed ibn Umail (10th century) for example, who became famous in the West as ‘Senior’ (the Sheikh), was a Shi’ite and his work … clearly bears the stamp of his own mystical experience” (von Franz 1975). The same alchemical-mystical conjunction appears for von Franz in Kabbalistic Judaism: “The alchemists were always associated with those religious undercurrents in a particular cultural setting which were of an introverted cast and which were in search of direct experience” (von Franz 1975).

In Alchemy: An Introduction, Ibn Umail’s “Letter from the Sun to the Waxing Moon” provides the central image of the albedo: the seven metals distributed through the seven stars, cleansed nine times until they look like pearls (von Franz 1980, p. 220). The letter-form itself matters — the alchemical coniunctio appears first as correspondence, as address, as logos passing between the poles before they are materially joined. Ibn Umail is therefore a hinge figure in the Lineage: the Shi’ite-Hermetic transmitter through whom the late-antique Greek alchemical corpus passed into the Arabic world and returned to the Latin West as the substrate of Dorn, Petrus Bonus, and Paracelsus.
