About

Animas Valley Institute, founded in 1980 by wilderness guide and depth psychologist Bill Plotkin, Ph.D., operates from Durango, Colorado, as a nonprofit organization dedicated to nature-based soul initiation. The Institute is one of North America's longest-standing organizations offering contemporary wilderness rites, drawing from depth psychology, ecopsychology, the poetic tradition, nature-based indigenous practices, and the wild Earth itself. Programs include twelve-day contemporary wilderness quests featuring four days of fasting in solitude, five-day Soulcraft Intensives, and advanced intensives in soulcentric dreamwork, council, shadow work, and deep imagery journeys. Plotkin's ecocentric revisioning of psychology invites participants into conscious embodied relationship with what he terms their 'original wholeness,' seeking commitment to the largest, soul-infused story one is capable of living in service to the greater Earth community. The Institute employs approximately twenty guides and maintains a small administrative staff. Specialized programs serve young adults ages seventeen to twenty-three, existing and emerging cultural leaders, and individuals transitioning into authentic elderhood. Animas Valley Institute occupies a unique position in the therapeutic landscape, operating at the intersection of clinical depth psychology, wilderness immersion, and initiatory ceremony.

Depth Orientation

Founded in 1980 by depth psychologist Bill Plotkin, Animas Valley Institute is one of North America's longest-standing organizations offering contemporary wilderness rites rooted in depth psychology, ecopsychology, and the poetic tradition. Their Soulcraft practices aim to evoke mythopoetic identity through symbol, metaphor, archetype, and dream, facilitating what they call 'soul encounter' — the revelation of one's unique psychic vocation expressed through archetypal imagery.
