About
Benjamin R. Lewis, M.D., is an associate professor of clinical psychiatry at the University of Utah and the principal investigator of the University of Utah Psychedelic Science Initiative, a research program dedicated to studying, developing, and implementing psychedelic medicine interventions with scientific rigor. He completed his undergraduate education at Harvard University studying English and philosophy and received his medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Dr. Lewis is board-certified in psychiatry and practices inpatient adult psychiatry and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute, where he also serves as clinical director of the Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Clinic in Park City, Utah. He has completed specialized training in psychedelic-assisted therapies through the California Institute of Integral Studies, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, and the Psychedelic Research and Training Institute. Dr. Lewis currently serves as principal investigator on three clinical trials exploring psychedelic-assisted therapy, with a distinctive focus on group-format interventions and the integration of psychedelic medicine with mindfulness practices, including Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. His HOPE study examined psilocybin-enhanced group psychotherapy for patients with cancer, and his most recent trial investigates psilocybin-assisted group psychotherapy combined with MBSR for frontline healthcare providers experiencing COVID-related depression and burnout. In 2024, he received the New Investigator Award from the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology.
