About

Dr. Pilar Jennings, PhD, is a New York City-based psychoanalyst and author with an extensive background in psychoanalytically oriented therapy and Buddhist meditation. She is one of the few clinicians rigorously trained in both psychoanalysis and Tibetan Buddhism who maintains an active clinical practice, bringing a unique and inclusive approach to psychological healing. She has been working with patients and their families through the Harlem Family Institute since 2004.

Dr. Jennings is a Visiting Lecturer at Union Theological Seminary, a guest lecturer at Columbia University, and a faculty member of the Nalanda Institute for Contemplative Science. A warm and engaging speaker, she is available for workshops and speaking engagements addressing topics related to spirituality and psychotherapy, creative clinical work with children, and healing from trauma.

She is the author of two acclaimed books. 'To Heal a Wounded Heart' is a psychoanalytic memoir in which she invites readers into the treatment of her first patient, exploring shared childhood vulnerability and the need for a spiritual component in traditional psychodynamic work. 'Mixing Minds: The Power of Relationship in Psychoanalysis and Buddhism' examines the two primary healing relationships — the religious teacher and student, and the therapist and patient — and what these traditions offer people seeking to improve their relational experience.

Clinical Orientation

Integrates psychoanalytic depth work with Tibetan Buddhist meditation practice. Her clinical approach draws on long-term Buddhist practice and psychoanalytic training to work with narcissism, trauma, anxiety, and the healing dimensions of the therapeutic relationship.
