Vicky Smith

Dr Vicky Smith is a UK-trained doctor and Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy, as well as a fully qualified Jungian Analyst through the Australian and New Zealand Society of Jungian Analysts (ANZSJA) and an Accredited EMDR Practitioner. She trained and worked extensively within the UK National Health Service (NHS), completing her psychiatric studies with a focus on psychodynamic psychotherapy. This training provided broad exposure to a range of modalities including Art Therapy, Group Therapy, Psychoanalysis, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), CBT, Transpersonal Therapy, and Transactional Analysis. Her NHS training was based in a Therapeutic Community Day Service for the treatment of personality disorder and in outpatient psychotherapy services.

Since relocating to New Zealand, Dr Smith worked within the District Health Board (DHB) across a variety of psychiatric specialties before transitioning into private practice. This move has allowed her to focus on providing talking and psychological therapies as a preferred modality of treatment for mental health. Her private practice emphasises psychological treatments with a particular interest in working at depth through analysis at more than once-weekly sessions, incorporating dreams, metaphor, sandplay, and images.

Dr Smith holds a rare combination of qualifications: she is registered with the New Zealand Medical Council (NZMC) with a vocational scope in Psychiatry, and with the General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK on the Specialist Register in Psychotherapy. She is also an Affiliate Member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) and a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) in the UK. She additionally serves as an ACC Psychiatric Assessor and Psychological Treatment Provider. For clinicians, she has training in supervision and many years of experience participating in and facilitating Balint Style Groups for reflection on professional practice.
