About
Stephen A. Martin, PsyD, is a Certified Jungian Analyst and Licensed Psychologist whose work is deeply rooted in the classical Jungian tradition. Trained by Jung's direct students — including Marie-Louise von Franz, C.A. Meier, James Hillman, and Barbara Hannah — he carries one of the most direct lineages in contemporary Jungian practice. He co-founded the Philemon Foundation and was instrumental in bringing Jung's Red Book to publication, and he serves as Editor-in-Chief of Quadrant, the leading English-language Jungian journal.
His therapeutic approach is guided by Jung's crucial discovery that unlived life and the loss of meaning are often at the root of psychological and spiritual suffering. Dreams, fantasies, spiritual longings, and symptoms are understood as symbolic expressions of this inner reality. Martin believes that understanding the meaning of these products of the inner world can dramatically alleviate suffering and make possible a larger, more creative, and spiritually satisfying life.
After decades of practice, Martin has come to understand that the compassionate care of suffering, coupled with symbolic understanding within a warm and collaborative dialogue, is the only way to treat the whole person. His work is particularly suited to those seeking serious analytical engagement with meaning-of-life and unlived-life themes.
