About

Robin E. van Loben Sels is a Jungian psychoanalyst, licensed psychoanalyst, scholar, and poet whose clinical career spans more than four decades. Born in Northern California, she earned her B.A. in English and Creative Writing from Pomona College in 1958 and her M.A. in Counseling Psychology from San Francisco State College in 1965. She received her Certificate in Psychoanalysis from the C.G. Jung Institute of New York in 1980, with interim training at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich, and later earned an M.Div. equivalency, an M.Phil., and a Ph.D. in Psychiatry and Religion from Union Theological Seminary.

Van Loben Sels has maintained a private practice in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy for over forty years, recently relocating her clinical practice from the Albuquerque-Santa Fe area of New Mexico to Maine. She teaches, supervises, and consults internationally, and is EMDR trained. Her professional affiliations include the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, the International Association for Analytical Psychology, and the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis.

A prolific author, van Loben Sels has published extensively at the intersection of depth psychology, spirituality, and symbolic process. Her books include A Dream in the World: Poetics of Soul in Two Women, Modern and Medieval (Routledge, 2003) and Shamanic Dimensions of Psychotherapy: Healing through the Symbolic Process (Routledge, 2017). Her scholarly work explores the poetics of soul, shamanic dimensions of healing, and the convergence of psychoanalytic and spiritual inquiry.
