About
John Michael Hayes, PhD, ABPP is a psychologist and psychoanalyst whose career represents an unusually thorough integration of multiple analytic traditions. A native of New York City, he studied philosophy at the Catholic University of America, graduating magna cum laude in 1971, and completed his doctorate in counseling and psychology at the same institution in 1977. His clinical training spans decades and modalities: internships at the Georgetown University Psychological Center and the Devereux Foundation in the mid-1970s, a two-year program at the Washington Gestalt Therapy Institute (1979-1981), training at the C.G. Jung Institute of New York (1994-1996), the Advanced Psychotherapy Training Program at the Washington School of Psychiatry (1998-2001), and the five-year program at the Washington Psychoanalytic Institute (2004-2009). In 2023 he completed Jungian training at the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association in New York City.
Dr. Hayes has been licensed as a psychologist in Maryland since 1978 and in 2010 qualified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology with a specialization in Psychoanalysis. He serves on the faculties of the University of Maryland Psychiatry Department, the Baltimore Washington Psychoanalytic Institute, and St. Mary's Seminary and University.
He also holds degrees in theology and is a priest of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, lending a spiritual dimension to his understanding of the psyche that many patients find deeply resonant.
