About
John A. Desteian is a diplomate Jungian psychoanalyst and training and supervising analyst at the International School of Analytical Psychology (ISAP Zurich), bringing an unusual dual formation in law and depth psychology to his clinical work. He earned a Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law in 1975 and subsequently trained at the C.G. Jung Institute Zurich, completing his Diploma in Analytical Psychology in 1983. He maintained a private practice in Saint Paul, Minnesota, beginning in 1983, where he co-founded Psychoanalytic Consultants alongside his wife, the Jungian analyst Judith Savage.
Desteian has held significant leadership roles within the international Jungian community. He was the founder, chairman, and executive director of Jungian International Training-Zurich, established in 2008, and the Canadian Foundation for Jungian International Training-Zurich. He served as co-president of the Association of Graduates in Analytical Psychology (AGAP) and as a member of the Executive Committee of the IAAP. His written work focuses on interpersonal relations, gender, creativity, and politics within a Jungian framework. He is the author of Coming Together, Coming Apart: The Play of Opposites in Love Relationships (1989; re-released 2021) and numerous articles and book reviews in professional journals, including contributions to Trust and Betrayal: Dawnings of Consciousness (2010). He now practices from Zurich.
