Emanation
Emanation
Emanation names the dynamic by which the lower hypostases proceed from the higher in the enneads — proodos (procession outward) coupled with epistrophe (reversion back toward the source). The doctrine answers the question that haunts Neoplatonism: how can a single, simple the-one give rise to multiplicity without itself being divided or diminished?
plotinus‘s answer is that the One produces necessarily and eternally, by overflow of its own perfection, without any act of will or temporal beginning: “as long as it exists it produces; but it exists for ever; so, therefore, do its products” (Enneads, cited in this recon). The image is of light from the sun, or heat from fire — the source loses nothing in giving rise to what depends on it. Edinger captures the asymmetry: every individual being “originates from the intellectual activity of a higher one and is, therefore, less real than its antecedent” (paraphrasing Plotinus, in Dihle 1982).
The structure is two-directional. Proodos is the descent from the-one to nous, from Nous to psyche-plotinian, from Soul to nature and matter. Epistrophe is the corresponding return — each level constituted by its contemplative turning back toward its source. This is the philosophical scaffolding for what the alchemical tradition will name solve et coagula and what Jung will name as the rhythm of psychic transformation: dissolution into the unconscious matrix, return as integrated form.
The doctrine is anti-Gnostic in its ontology. The descent is not a fall, the lower not a prison. Edinger emphasizes Plotinus’s “attitude to the visible universe was utterly opposed to that of the Gnostics. For them it was an evil prison, vitiated in its very nature, produced as a result of the fall of a spiritual power” (Edinger 1999). For Plotinus the descent is the necessary self-display of the Good.
